Morning is the first installment of the song cycle, Songs of the Prairie. The piece reflects on the beautiful phenomena of a Kansas sunrise over a vast expanse of fields. The piano accompaniment consists of a two/three ration, employing continuous triplets in a duple time signature, while the voice gently expounds upon the breaking of dawn over an “inland ocean.” Short and poignant, Morning acts as an introduction to the song cycle as a larger work on the whole, while still nodding to the simplistic beauty of a natural, Kansas sunrise.
The morning wakes.
The corn softly waving
brings word of a thousand whispers
The dawn breaks.
With it comes the light of a million suns,
dissolving into the blue that reigns supreme,
reflecting off an inland ocean.
